Begging at busy Shah Alam intersection, foreigner nabbed

KUALA LUMPUR: A 72-year-old foreigner was arrested by the police yesterday after he was found begging at the busy intersection of Jalan Subang Batu Tiga in Shah Alam.

Upon spotting the presence of Shah Alam traffic policemen, the Myanmar national who holds a United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) card, tried to flee but failed.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said his men nabbed the beggar who had gone begging from one car to another.

"As part of the investigations, we seized RM185 from the beggar. We believe the sum was received from begging," he said.

A probe is on-going under Section 283 of the Penal Code and Section 27(c) of the Minor Offences Act for danger or obstruction in a public place and begging; as well as Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act for control of entry into Malaysia.

Iqbal urged those with information to contact assistant investigating officer Sergeant Syed Ali at 010-2424949.
