Bangladeshi cleaner charged with murdering friend [NSTTV]

BALIK PULAU: A Bangladeshi national was charged at the Magistrate's Court here today for the murder of his friend and fellow countryman more than a week ago.

No plea was recorded from Mohammad Imran Miah, 32, who works as a cleaner, when the charge was read before Magistrate Nur Fadrina Zulkhairi.

He only nodded his head when asked if he understood the charge.

Imran, who was unrepresented, was charged with the murder of Alam Safiq, 32, in front of the entrance to Kompleks Astaka Bukit Gedung in Bayan Baru between 9.30pm and 11.17pm on Aug 21.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Atikah Asharaf Ali told the court that no bail was offered.

"You are charged for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. It is a non-bailable offence under the law.

"As such, the court will fix another date for mention pending the post-mortem report," Nur Fadrina told the accused.

She then set Nov 23 for mention.

The accused has been working in Malaysia since 2016.

Last Monday, it was reported that a foreigner was believed to have been killed in a fight when he was found dead with a stab wound in Bukit Gedung, Bayan Baru near here.

Police received information on a fight involving foreigners in the area at 11pm and immediately proceeded to the scene.

They found a man lying dead on the ground with a stab wound.

Following the incident, police arrested four men, also foreigners, aged 31 to 45, near the scene. They were a cleaner, sundry store keeper, factory operator and construction worker.

Three of them have since been released and will appear as prosecution witnesses.

The motive of the incident was suspected to be revenge.
