Police rescue six Indonesian women from human trafficking

MUAR: Police rescued six Indonesian women, aged 20 to 35, from becoming victims of human trafficking in Jalan Abdul Rahman here yesterday.

Acting Muar police chief Superintendent Muhammad Aidil Roneh Abdullah said the rescue came following the arrest of two local men and a woman, aged 27 to 62, who are believed to be involved in human trafficking, at 4pm yesterday.

Police seized a handphone belonging to one of the suspects and several documents for further investigations.

"The arrest and raid were carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Johor police headquarters, as well as the Kulai and Muar police headquarters, and the Muar motorcycle patrol unit."

Aidil said the case was being investigated under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which provides a jail term of up to 15 years and a fine upon conviction.

He said one of the suspects would be remanded for three days from today and one woman and one man would be remanded for seven days. – BERNAMA
