GE15: 4 arrested, 8 investigation papers opened over election offences

KUALA LUMPUR: The police arrested four individuals — one in Selangor and three in Sarawak — on nomination day for the 15th General Election (GE15) yesterday for allegedly committing various election offences.

Police GE15 Operations director Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali, who is head of the Internal Security and Public Order Department, said eight investigation papers had been opened.

The investigations were carried out for offences under the Penal Code, namely Section 500 for defamation, Section 447 for criminal trespassing, Section 506 for criminal intimidation and Section 147 for rioting, as well as Section 233 (1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, and the Election Act, he said today.

Hazani said police had also issued 289 "ceramah" (political talks) permits, with 52 of them in Perak, 47 in Johor, 32 in Selangor, 29 in Kedah, 28 in Sabah, 22 in Sarawak, 18 in Penang, 15 in Negri Sembilan, 14 each in Pahang and Melaka, seven in Terengganu, six in Kelantan, three Perlis (three) and two in Kuala Lumpur.

"A total of 19 talks were found to be held without permit, with 11 of them in Selangor, five in Perak, two in Terengganu and one in Pahang," he said. – Bernama
