Couple nabbed with RM9.5 million worth of syabu

KUALA KRAI: Kelantan police believed that they have crippled a syndicate smuggling in syabu with the arrest of a couple and seizure of RM9.5 million worth of the drugs yesterday.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said the seizure and the arrests were made in Batu Jong here.

He said police also seized a Perodua Alza which belonged to the couple.

"A patrol car unit was conducting routine survelliance in the area when they stopped the vehicle about 8.30am. After checking the car, police discovered 11 gunny sacks containing the drugs.

"They then detained the husband and wife, aged 26 and 28. Also inside the car were the couple's two young kids," he said.

Zaki said initial investigations showed that the syabu, weighing about 264kg, were for distribution in the Klang Valley.

"We suspect the drugs were for the consumption of nearly 2.6 million addicts. Also seized from the couple were RM8,899 cash and 200 Thai baht," he added.

He said the couple, who were believed to be transporters, have been remanded for seven days to assist investigations into the case.

"Our investigations also revealed that the two had been hired by a drug syndicate and received about RM5,000 for each trip they made," he added.
