Police arrest lorry driver who crashed into woman on NSE

KUALA KANGSAR: A container lorry driver was arrested over a crash on the North-South Expressway this morning that caused the death of a woman.

The victim, B. Karthigayayini, 37, from Gelugor, Penang died on the spot, while the car driver, a 29-year-old man, was injured in the 5.30am incident.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said the 53-year-old lorry driver from Butterworth, Penang was picked up not long after the crash to assist in the investigation. 

He said initial investigations showed that the Honda Civic, with three occupants inside, had broke down, prompting the driver to pull over to the road shoulder. 

"The driver of the car and the victim then got out of the car to check the problem when the lorry came from behind. 

"The lorry driver failed to notice the Civic and hit the right side of the vehicle and the duo who were standing near the car," he said when contacted today. 

He said upon impact, the woman thrown off to the left side of the road and woman died on the spot while the car driver was injured. The third occupant in the car, a woman, escaped unhurt. 

"The lorry then skidded before hitting the side railing and overturned," he said, adding that the driver was not injured. 

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in death.
