Nasyid singer Muhammad Yasin fails to quash drugs charges

KUALA LUMPUR: Nasyid composer and singer Muhammad Yasin Sulaiman has failed to quash his three drugs charges.

This after the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) rejected his representation letter to review the charges today.

A letter of representation is normally sent to the AGC by an accused either to reduce or drop the charge.

Deputy Public prosecutor Mohd Asnawi Abu Hanipah said the AGC would send an official letter to inform Yasin's counsel Ariff Azami Hussein about its decision soon.

He said the trial is slated to go on in March.

Meanwhile, Ariff said he planned to file a second representation letter to the AGC soon.

The court fixed Feb 20 for next hearing.

Earlier, the court set 15 days for the trial starting on March 6.

The Mimpi Laila singer was charged with ingesting cannabis at the Petaling Jaya District Headquarters Narcotics Office at 11.05 pm last March 24.

He faces a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or a maximum jail term of two years if convicted.

He was also charged with possessing cannabis-type drugs weighing 193.7 grams and cultivating 17 cannabis plants in plastic pots at his residence at Persiaran Surian Damansara Indah Resort Homes, PJU 3, Kota Damansara here, at 5.30pm on the same date.

The drug possession charge carries life imprisonment or not less than five years with no less than 10 strokes of the rotan, if convicted.
