Zahid arrives in court ahead of Akalbudi corruption trial

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi arrived at the High Court here ahead of his corruption trial involving Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB).

The Umno president is the first senior minister to sit in the dock to face his multiple corruption charges involving RM31million of YAB's funds.

The Bagan Datuk member of parliament arrived at 8.45am with his entourage before he headed to High Court 1 located at level four of the building.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Raja Rozela Raja Toran prosecuted the case while counsel Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik appeared for the accused.

Zahid, 70, is facing 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, graft and money laundering involving charity foundation Yayasan Akalbudi funds and he has been ordered to enter his defence against all charges.

For the 12 CBT charges, Zahid is alleged to have used the funds to make payments for personal credit cards, insurance policies and licences for his personal vehicles, remittances to a law firm and contributions to the police football association.

The charge carries a maximum of 20 years' jail, whipping and a fine.
