Penang authorities raid workshops modifying m-cycles for illegal racing

GEORGE TOWN: A motorcycle workshop in Jalan Gurdwara here, popular with Mat Rempit who come to modify their machines for illegal racing, was raided by the authorities today.

This is the second time the workshop has been raided, with the first taking place last year.

State Road Transport Department director Adenan Md Isa said despite last year's raid, the workshop continued to modify motorcycles.

He said RTD found 14 motorcycles being modified in the raid.

"We have identified 12 motorcycle workshops in the northeast and southwest districts doing modifications. However, when we conducted the raid today, only five workshops were open.

"From the five raids, we detected 24 motorcycles had been modified involving 30 offences. We issued 66 summonses.

"We are giving these workshops 10 days from today to remove the modifications made."

Twelve raids were held simultaneously by the RTD, police, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and Penang Island City Council.

Last September, Penang police conducted checks on 21 motorcycle workshops believed to be carrying out modifications for illegal racing.

The operation was a follow up to a July 17 accident where five men were killed and two others injured in a crash in Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

Police believed the bikers in the accident were illegally racing.

Last August, the Transport Ministry said Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 would be amended to impose heavier penalties on illegal racers.
