Man fined RM6,000 for using uncertified communication equipment

IPOH: The Sessions Court here fined a man RM6,000 here today for using uncertified satellite communication equipment - a parabola antenna, in June last year

Judge Azizah Ahmad meted out the punishment on Faizan Ashfaq Ahmed, 47 after he pleaded guilty and ordered him to serve two months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

According to the charge sheet, the man was charged for using communication equipment which did not meet the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000.

The equipment is in the form of a satellite broadcasting antenna unit and a decoder unit which he installed at his home in Kampung Dendang, Beruas, in Manjung at about 12.40 pm on 28 June last year.

The accused was charged under Regulation 16 (1)(b) of the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, six years imprisonment, or both upon conviction.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) prosecution officer Siti Hajar Sulaiman was prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
