Week-long remand for Perlis policeman who shot wife dead

KANGAR: A police lance corporal who shot dead his wife at their home in Simpang Empat here yesterday, has been remanded for a week beginning today.

Magistrate Ana Rozana Mohd Nor granted the remand application against the 27-year-old suspect at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital where he is currently warded.

He is expected to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Meanwhile, Kangar police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said investigators were trying to establish the motive behind the murder.

"We are looking into every possible aspect, including drug abuse, depression or mental illness because the couple did not get involved in a fight or even quarrel before the incident," he said when contacted.

It was reported that the 6am shooting took place at the couple's residence in Kampung Bendang Baru, Simpang Empat, Jalan Kangar-Alor Star.

The incident happened after the suspect, who is from Terengganu, had just finished his shift.

According to a witness, who was his (suspect's) father-in-law, he suddenly took out his Walter P99 pistol and shot his wife, identified as Safsufarnisya Salleh, 26.

The suspect had fired over five shots at close range, hitting the face, in the left eye, causing immediate death.

The victim's parents and a nephew who were at home during the shooting, immediately fled the house and contacted the police.
