Man claims trial to attempted murder of policeman

GEORGE TOWN: A contract worker, who was arrested for injuring a policeman with a knife, was charged with attempted murder at the Sessions Court here today.

S. Ramesh, 33, claimed trial when the charge was read to him by a court interpreter before Judge Mohammad Khalid Ab Karim.

Ramesh is alleged to have caused hurt to Lance Corporal Mohamad Azril Syamil Mohamad Hanafi at a house at Lebuh Thean Teik about 12.15am on March 1.

He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 20 years' jail upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Jin Hong did not offer bail.

Ramesh, who was unrepresented, requested the court for bail.

Khalid asked Ramesh if there was someone to bail him out, to which he replied in the negative.

He also told the court that he works as a contract worker, earning about RM1,300 a month, prior to his arrest.

He told the court that he was single and had no one under his care.

"The prosecution did not offer bail but the court is using its discretion to grant bail at RM5,000 with one surety.

"You are also to report yourself to the nearest police station on the 1st of every month. You are also not to approach the victim in any way," Khalid told Ramesh.

He then fixed April 11 for mention of the case.

On March 1, it was reported that a 33-year-old-man was arrested at a flat in Air Itam here for injuring a policeman with a knife.

The victim, 29, attached to the Bandar Baru police station, was with his partner on a crime prevention patrol in Air Itam prior to the attack.

They saw the suspect making a U-turn after spotting a roadblock in front of him, and proceeded to followant stop him.

The suspect admitted to not having a licence. However, during checks, the suspect acted aggressively and slashed the victim with a knife which he took from a house near where he was stopped.

The victim suffered wounds on his forehead as well as a skull fracture.
