Man charged for drunk driving

IPOH: A 30-year-old civil servant was charged at the magistrate's court here today with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Jazvinjit Singh who works at a hospital here however pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan.

The accused was charged with driving a Honda Civic under the influence of alcohol with the presence of 167mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system.

The reading was over the permitted limit of 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The incident occurred at Jalan Lapangan Terbang Off Jalan Angsana, in front of the Police Air Wing Training Base (PLPGU) at 12.10am on Friday.

He was charged under Section 45 (A) (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a jail term of not more than two years, and a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of conviction, if found guilty.

Deputy Public Prosecutor N.M. Moganaraj Mithra prosecuted while the accused was represented by a lawyer, Ranjit Singh Sandhu.

Moganaraj proposed bail of a RM8,000 but Ranjit requested RM5,000 bail as this was his first's client offence.

The court then set RM7,000 bail with one surety and the accused needs to report to the nearest police station once a month until the case is settled.

The court fixed April 3 for mention.

It was reported that a man suspected to be drunk was arrested after he assaulted two police officers at the checkpoint of the PLPGU here.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Yahaya Hassan said the man crashed his vehicle into a roadblock near the guard post before going berserk when confronted by police.

Due to the incident, two policemen suffered minor injuries and were treated at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here.
