3 foreigners in love scam syndicate nabbed in Genting Highlands

BENTONG: Three foreigners including a woman were arrested on Friday for their suspected involvement in an Internet love scam syndicate in Genting Highlands near here.

The trio aged between 32 and 37 were arrested at two separate locations by a team of policemen from the Bentong Commercial Crime Investigation Division at about noon.

Bentong police chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar said acting on a tip-off and surveillance, policemen raided two separate apartment units in Genting Highlands.

"Three individuals detained at the two units were suspected to be behind the Internet love scam syndicate. None of them had travel documents.

"Police recovered three laptops, seven handphones, a tablet computer and an Internet router believed to be used by the syndicate members for their illegal activities," he said in a statement today.

Zaiham said the case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carried a jail sentence of between a year and 10 years with whipping, and the offender is also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

He said the trio were also probed under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1956/63 for not possessing valid travel documents.

Zaiham urged the public to provide information about any immoral and suspicious activities in their neighbourhood to the Bentong police headquarters at 09-2222222 or any nearby police station.
