Husband strangles wife to death before attempting suicide

KOTA KINABALU: A woman was believed to have been strangled to death by her own husband in an incident at a rental room on the first floor of a building in Jalan Pantai here, today.

The incident was noticed by the couple's neighbour, who was shocked to hear an argument before the victim's husband knocked on the neighbour's door and asked them to leave the building at around 5am.

The neighbour then contacted the police at 8am.

Later, the woman's body was found lying while her husband, in his 30s, was also found lying with signs of suffocation and a wound on his forehead, believed to be from a suicide attempt.

District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said initial investigations found that the victim lived with her husband in the rental room.

He said the victim was believed to have been murdered by her husband due to signs of bruising on her neck, believed to have been strangled, as well as a wound on her forehead.

"We believe this case is a domestic conflict between the victim and her husband because before the incident, the victim's neighbor had heard an argument.

"The couple was found lying down and the neighbor contacted the police a little later because at the time of the incident, his mobile phone did not have credit," he said when met at the scene.

Mohd Zaidi said initial investigations found that the victim's husband worked at a restaurant around the area while his wife was a housewife.

He said the victim's body was sent to the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for further investigation and autopsy to determine the actual motive of the incident.

"The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," he said.
