Kelantan Customs Dept seizes RM2m worth of illicit cigarettes

RANTAU PANJANG: The state Customs Department has seized illicit cigarettes worth more than RM2 million, including in unpaid duties, in Bachok here earlier this week.

A Customs Department enforcement team raided a lorry in Pantai Senok here at 11pm on Tuesday, following a tip-off and a two-week investigation and surveillance.

State Customs Department director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said the team found 209 boxes containing two million sticks of cigarettes upon inspection.

"We believe that the contraband was smuggled into Kelantan using boats from a neighbouring country," he said.

"Initial investigation showed that the contraband was intended for local distribution."

Wan Jamal, however, said no arrests were made during the operation.
