Wedding planner pleads to be spared from caning for cheating bride-to-be

KUALA LUMPUR: A wedding planner who cheated a bride-to-be of RM9,000 pleaded to be spared from caning.

Hasmerun Hashim, 31, said this after pleading guilty to cheating a 29-year-old woman by deceiving her into transferring RM9,000 via two transactions to a CIMB account in August last year.

He admitted to the offence before magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim.

Hasmerun, who was unrepresented, asked for a minimum sentence on the grounds that he was supporting his aged parents, younger siblings and nephews.

"I also ask to be spared the rotan."

However, this was objected to by deputy public prosecutor Nadia Eleena Jamaluddin Akbal, who said there was nothing special that warranted the accused to be spared the punishment.

Atiqah sentenced Hasmerun to one year in jail and a stroke of the rotan.

She ordered him to serve the prison sentence from today.

The charge sheet alleged that he had deceived the victim into transferring the money to an account owned by him, under the name of Arjuna Cinta Wedding, on the pretext of providing wedding planner services.

He committed the offence at a home in Taman Shamelin Perkasa, Cheras, here on Aug 23 and 25 last year.
