Jakim to hold 'solat hajat' over political crisis

KUALA LUMPUR: The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has urged all mosques nationwide to hold “solat hajat” (prayer of need) as Malaysia experiences political turmoil.

Its director-general Datuk Paimuzi Yahya said all mosques under Jakim will conduct the solat hajat starting today.

”The prayers will be held at all of our main mosques, including the National Mosque, Putra Mosque and Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque.

”We will also pray for the people in the country to stay united during this tough time,” Paimuzi said in a statement.

The director-general explained that Jakim made the decision to hold the solat hajat to seek guidance from Allah in returning Malaysia to its stable state.

The political crisis saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan coalition following the exit of 26 Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia MPs and 11 PKR MPs.

The move followed the resignation of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and subsequent appointment as Interim Prime Minister on Monday.

Dr Mahathir broke his silence on Wednesday in a televised address to the rakyat, expressing his hope of forming a “non-partisan administration” that would put the interests of the nation first.
