Pubgoers among top RMCO violators

KUALA LUMPUR: Police nabbed a total of 383 individuals for violating the Recovery Movement Control Order's (RMCO) standard operating procedures (SOPs) on Sunday, including 328 who patronised pubs and night clubs.

Senior Defense Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a statement today said of the total nabbed, 32 were remanded, while the rest comprising 351 individuals were slapped with a RM1,000 compound each.

He said apart from those who visited pubs and night clubs, the remaining 55 individuals were nabbed for taking part in activities that made social distancing difficult.

The RMCO SOP compliance operation task force, led by the police, conducted 61,907 inspections nationwide on Sunday.

Ismail Sabri said 11,996 personnel from 2,809 compliance teams had also carried out inspections at 3,681 supermarkets, 5,535 restaurants, 1,882 hawker stalls, 2,086 factories, 3,458 banks and 745 government offices nationwide, on Sunday.

"Also inspected were 1,166 land transport terminals, 214 water transport terminals, and 96 air transport terminals," he said.

Meanwhile on the country's border control, Ismail Sabri said authorities had set up 65 Ops Benteng roadblocks at smuggling prone spots and "lorong tikus" along the nation's borders to deter illegal immigrants from entering the country.

"Border control also conducted inspections on 36,001 vehicles crossing the border and 14 foreigners were arrested by the police for immigration related offences.

"The government will continue to take stern action against any party who tries to enter the country's borders illegally and enforcement agencies will continue to tighten border control, especially at 'lorong tikus'," Ismail Sabri said.

Speaking about inspection and level of SOP compliance at construction sites, he said six sites in Terengganu and Kelantan inspected by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) on Sunday, all followed SOPs.

"From all the inspections carried out by CIDB since April 20, we found that the majority, or 3,225 sites visited, so far followed SOPs. However 541 that did not comply were given warning while 19 others were ordered to stop work for their failure to adhere to SOPs, " he said.

Meanwhile, checks on the availability of food items in the country is also at its optimum level with sufficient supply for all.

"The Domestic Trade and Consumerism ministry has also checked 126,781 business premises since May 13 and found that 119,433 had no problems following the regulations set by the ministry. Only a small fraction of 297 premises were given warning while another 5,497 premises were let off with reminders so far," he said.

He also reminded Malaysians to continue following the SOPs and not to let their guards down, despite Covid-19 cases not showing significant increase.
