Cuepacs: Work-from-home order is timely

KUALA LUMPUR: The Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) supports the government directive for employees, especially those in red zones, to work from home starting Thursday (Oct 22).

Its president Adnan Mat said the announcement was timely considering the recent hike in Covid-19 cases nationwide.

"We sees this as a way for the government to break the Covid-19 transmission chain once again, especially in red zones.

"This decision will help parents stay home with their children as well, since child care centres and schools are closed.

"And with this working arrangement, we can minimise employee movement by alternating those who need to be in the office or completely work from home.

"It should be no problem for us to go back to this mode of work as we have done it since Movement Control Order (MCO) was imposed on March 18," he told the New Straits Times when contacted today.

Meanwhile, the congress secretary-general Abdul Rahman Mohd Mohd Nordin said it was best if all employees, including those residing in yellow or green zones, minimise movement by working from home as well.

"We have to follow the government's directive, especially the standard operating procedures (SOP).

"Wear your mask and observe physical distancing at workplaces. If you are feeling unwell, please seek immediate medical help.

"We understand that some people refuse to seek medical help and go to work as usual, even if they are feeling slightly unwell. We can't afford to do that now.

"Be honest and be wary of your surroundings.

"If these employees, including those residing in the green or yellow areas are allowed to work from home, please do so.

"Another way is by arranging alternate days for workers to come in to the office … some days we'd have three people in the office, and other days, two. It depends on your workplace management as well," he said.
