Covid-19: Nearly 2pct foreign workers tested are positive

KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly two per cent of foreign workers tested under the mandatory Covid-19 screening programme have been found positive for the virus, said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Senior Minister (Security Cluster) said yesterday, the Human Resources Ministry reported that 6,894 foreign workers had been screened and 154 of them were tested positive.

"Cumulatively, 205,316 foreign workers from 7,852 employers had been screened for Covid-19.

"From the total, 4,096 are positive and 201,220 negative," he said in a statement today.

He added that 854 clinics were part of the screening programme.

"This (screening) is in line with the government's directive for all foreign workers to undergo compulsory screening, namely those in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, with their respective employers to bear the cost of the procedures."

The government made the announcement for the compulsory screening in December last year following the increase in positive cases among foreign workers, particularly at factories and construction sites.
