2,176 new Covid-19 cases, 10 deaths reported

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 2,176 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the country as of noon today, an overwhelming majority of which were local transmissions, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Only one was an imported case and despite seeing a downward trend on the number of daily cases since Jan 5, 10 people succumbed to the virus today, bringing the death toll to 975.

"The death cases today involved five people from Selangor, two from Kuala Lumpur, and one each from Sabah, Johor and Perak. All of these deaths involved Malaysians.

"4,521 Covid-19 patients were discharged today, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 218,335," he said in a statement today.

As of today, Malaysia has 266,445 Covid-19 cases nationwide since the pandemic hit the country last year.

There are, however, indications that Covid-19 cases in the country are improving with 260 patients currently being treated in the intensive care unit, a slight reduction from the 319 ICU cases reported on Jan 30.

Out of the 260 cases in the ICU, 112 of them require breathing assistance.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor recorded the highest number of cases today with 910, followed by Johor with 269 cases, Sarawak has 246 cases, Kuala Lumpur with 182 cases and Negeri Sembilan at 145 cases.

Only Perlis and Labuan recorded zero cases.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, of the total cases in Selangor, 724 people were infected due to several Covid-19 clusters as well as having close-contact with positive patients.

The current number of active cases is 47,135.
