KUALA LUMPUR: Police have limited interstate travel from Mondays to Thursdays for all reasons except essential work-related trips and emergency situations.
However, from Friday to Sunday, any sort of interstate travel will not be allowed from now, with the exception of emergencies.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani in a statement said this rule would be applied even during the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri season.
He said the decision to tighten interstate travels comes following the sudden and continuous spike in new Covid-19 cases these last four days.
"We do not have a choice but to impose a strict travel limitation for everyone not to attempt any interstate travels, as we fear the possibility of a further spike in cases," he said.
Acryl Sani said any requests to travel on the weekends will not be approved unless it involves a family emergency, death among immediate family members and long distance spouses.
"Any interstate travel for social events, weddings and family gatherings will not be approved," he said, adding that anyone caught trying to breach the rule would be severely dealt with.
On Standard Operating Procedures at Ramadan bazaars, Acryl Sani said district police chiefs will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring the highest level of compliance throughout the fasting month.
