KUALA LUMPUR: Covid-19 clusters involving educational institutions have doubled from six to 12 in a week, Health Ministry said.

The Ministry, through an infographic on its Twitter page, outlined the recorded increase between 14th epidemiology week (April 4 to 10) and 15th epidemiology week (April 11 and 17.

It said clusters involving workplace and community also increased to 7.14 per cent and 5.9 per cent respectively.

The infographic showed the number of cases for both religious activities and detention centres' clusters remained the same in both weeks while those involving import cases have become nil the 15th epidemiology week.

According to Bernama, 39 clusters with 1,420 cases involving schools or institutions under the Education Ministry had been recorded from Jan 1 to April 20.

Due to the high number of schools involved, several states such as Kelantan have ordered for schools to be closed.

Today, five out of eight new Covid-19 clusters identified by the Health Ministry were education-related clusters, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

Earlier, the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) had requested the Education Minister to consider providing quarantine leave for teachers who were identified as Covid-19 close contacts cases before receiving their quarantine letters from the health district office.
