Govt to decide if work-from-home measures should return

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will decide whether to reintroduce work-from-home (WFH) measures following the announcement that all primary and secondary schools nationwide will return to home-based teaching and learning method (PdPR) after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the matter would first be discussed with the Public Service Department (PSD) and the International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI).

"Civil servants and private sector workers are currently all working at their respective offices after the work-from-home order was revoked following the improvement of the Covid-19 situation in the country.

"But the daily cases has remained above 2,700 cases for some days now, so the government will discuss the (WFH) issue with the Health Ministry, PSD and MITI to see what can be done to lessen the parents' burden," he said today.

Earlier, he was asked if the WFH policy for both the public and private sectors would be reintroduced as PdPR would require parents' supervision.

"PSD will make the announcement for public sector and MITI for private sector, should any changes be made. Wait for the outcome of the discussions," he said.

Yesterday, Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said all primary and secondary schools nationwide would return to PdPR when the education session resumes after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays to prevent a Covid-19 outbreak in schools.

All schools around the country will conduct PdPR for a total of 10 days until the start of the mid-year school break on May 28 for schools in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, and May 29 for the remaining states.

Hundreds of schools in red zones have been ordered to close after reports of positive cases among students, teachers and staff.

Health Ministry data also showed that the number of clusters in educational institutions has increased by 83 per cent in the past seven days.
