University, college students except those in Sarawak, can go home for Raya

KUALA LUMPUR: Students from higher learning institutions, except for those in Sarawak, are allowed to return home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, said Higher Education Ministry today.

The students, in six categories of the teaching and learning programmes, could leave from May 7 to 12 and return to campus from May 15 to 20, in a decision made by the National Security Council special meeting yesterday.

"The respective institutions will provide interstate or inter-district travel approvals to the students and coordinate their travel dates.

"They are to travel using only their own vehicle, picked up by their parents or guardians, use the bus provided by the institutions or travel by air.

"They are not allowed to use public transport," said the ministry, adding that students were also given the option to remain on campus.

The Ministry estimated about 103,994 students who are currently on campus would be involved in the arrangement.

Several travel mechanisms have also been set to ensure movements are controlled and conducted in stages.

The Ministry also urged students and parents to refer to the travel Standard Operating Procedures and Frequently Asked Questions on www.mohe.gov.my.
