Malaysia continues frozen meat import from India

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia continues to import frozen meat from India although the Covid-19 cases there continue to spike.

Veterinary Services Department (DVS) director-general Datuk Dr Norlizan Mohd Noor said there was no decision by the government to impose import ban from the said country so far.

Nonetheless, he said, procedures to import frozen meat to Malaysia had been constantly tightened to address any issue related to supply.

"We still allow the import of frozen beef from India, but only from certified abattoirs," he told Berita Harian today.

Yesterday, Cambodia banned imported meat products from India including frozen meat to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Cambodia's General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) director general Kun Nhim said in a statement that the decision was effective immediately, reported Xinhua.

Referring to a previous media report, the Health Ministry said the World Health Organisation (WHO) had yet to issue any report on Covid-19 infection via frozen meat as what had been discovered by researchers from China.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said they would look into the matter after WHO verified the issue.

"So far, there is no reported Covid-19 case due to (infected) imported frozen meat in the country," he said.
