ICU bed usage in Penang at 83 per cent

GEORGE TOWN: A decision on the next phase of movement restrictions to be implemented in Penang is expected to be announced after a technical meeting tomorrow.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who participated in the National Security Council (NSC) special session on Covid-19 management chaired by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin via online this afternoon, said the relevant authorities had considered the risk assessment and analysis of Penang's current Covid-19 situation.

"A decision (on the next phase of the movement restrictions for Penang) is expected to be announced after the technical meeting tomorrow.

"During the meeting, the Health Ministry also shared that the ICU bed usage in Covid-19 hospitals in the state has reached 83 per cent.

"As such, there is a need for us to be cautious and not allow our medical sector to collapse," he said this evening.

Penang's Covid-19 numbers have breached the 300 mark for two consecutive days. Today, the state recorded 313 Covid-19 cases compared with yesterday's 305 cases.

Meanwhile, Chow said he had also held further discussions with the state Health Department director, state NSC director, state secretary, state police chief and both the Penang Island and Seberang Prai City Councils' mayors on further actions and the necessary preparations in facing such challenging times.
