Covid-19 beds in Kelantan hospitals filled to brim

KOTA BARU: The Covid-19 pandemic in Kelantan has reached a critical stage as the health system in place to mitigate daily cases is breaking at the seams.

State exco Dr Izani Husin said beds at hospitals for Covid-19 treatment and low-risk quarantine and treatment centres were filled to the brim.

He also said there were insufficient staff members to handle the increasing daily cases.

It is learnt about 50 people would test positive for Covid-19 daily, with four deaths per day.

As the situation worsens, Dr Izani said the government had resorted to employing contract hires to aid health staff members in managing the cases.

He said they were only signed up recently, without revealing the total number of contract employees involved in the endeavour.

"We do not have enough health staff members to cope with the situation. More than half of them have been deployed to hospitals and Covid-19 low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

"They will be assisted by the contract hires," Dr Izani said when contacted.

He said the number of cases continued to increase with no signs of abating.

Currently, more than 2,000 people have been placed under Home Isolation Order and Person Under Surveillance, with the number of community and workplace clusters continuing to soar daily.

The latest community clusters were recorded in Pasir Mas, forcing three villages to be placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order for two weeks beginning tomorrow.

The affected villages are Kampung Paya Ular, Kampung Tualang and Kampung Bechah Palas.
