MBPP lodges police report after officers attacked

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has lodged a police report after several of their officers were attacked while carrying out duties at the Pulau Tikus market early this morning.

The incident happened when the officers were conducting Covid-19 standard operating procedures' (SOP) compliance checks at the market.

In a posting on the MBPP Facebook page, it said the officers were sealing a "lorong tikus" (rat lane) when they stumbled upon a woman.

She was not wearing a face mask and was trying to enter the rat lane.

It further said that one of the officers reprimanded the woman.

"All of a sudden, she punched the officer on the stomach. She then entered the market place and headed towards the other officers.

"She then took out a knife and threw it towards them. She picked up the knife and fled," the posting read.

The MBPP has lodged a police report following the incident.

MBPP Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang urged the people to respect the officers on duty.

"We also advise the people to comply with the SOP at all times to break the chain of infection of Covid-19," he added.
