Authorities hand over notices to Bagan Ajam market traders who fail to produce swab test results

BUTTERWORTH: The Seberang Prai City Council today mobilised house-to-house operations to trace traders at the Bagan Ajam market who failed to submit or update their Covid-19 swab test results.

Mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the council, together with the Health Ministry and police, went to the homes of five traders to hand over notices to them.

"The Integrated Operations Team handed over the notices to the traders so they can contact the operations room for screening tests. If they still fail to do so, enforcement action can be taken against them according to provisions of the law.

"Yesterday, 17 traders failed to do the necessary. However, when we issued warnings through our social media page, 12 of them contacted us. Since five of them failed to do so, we were forced to go to their houses today," he said.

Rozali said they had ordered all 38 traders at the Bagan Ajam market to go for swab tests and send in the results to the city council.

However, only 22 traders complied with the directive.

The Bagan Ajam market was ordered closed on May 12 to stem the spread of the Covid-19 virus after several positive cases were reported there.

The wet market was allowed to open for business after three days.

However, the food complex and the non-halal area remained close for another 10 days.

Today, council workers also put up barbed wire at the Bagan Ajam market, one of several markets on the mainland, identified as having issues with shortcut routes.
