Terengganu Health director calls on people not to take Covid-19 infection lightly

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Health director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus has called on the people in the state not to take Covid-19 infection lightly.

In a Facebook post today, she said the state recorded a three-digit figure in new Covid-19 cases for the second day in a row.

"(And) tomorrow, maybe (we'll have) another three-digit figure. Currently, there are 14 patients receiving treatment at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) intensive care unit.

"We were not surprised (with the numbers), as the people in Terengganu themselves give so much space and opportunity for Covid-19 (to spread)," she wrote.

In the post, Dr Nor Azimi shared five instances of non-compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which subsequently led to spikes in Covid-19 cases in the state.

"First, a gathering of 18 friends at an empty house in Setiu saw 17 individuals tested positive, involving friends and family members.

"Second, an individual was tested positive following job screening in Johor. Family close contacts in Dungun were screened, and 41 tested positive.

"Third, a breaking of fast event involving 20 individuals, which caused the Bukit Pauh cluster in Dungun.

"A total of 78 individuals tested positive for Covid-19 and 496 close contacts. It subsequently spread to Kuala Terengganu following discussion and 'moreh' at a food stall, with another two individuals tested positive.

"Fourth, a breaking of fast event at a surau in Marang saw 26 individuals tested positive.

"Lastly, a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with no risk assessment conducted after that had caused 36 individuals tested positive for Covid-19, with thousands of close contacts being screened.

"These were among the cases that derived from non-compliance with the SOP."

Dr Nor Azimi said all community leaders should ensure compliance with SOP.

"Suspend all gatherings and stay home. However, should you feel that you're immune to Covid-19 then go ahead with your activities."
