More beds needed at ICU and wards at RPZII Hospital

KOTA BARU: The Raja Perempuan Zainab II (RPZII) Hospital here has to add more beds following the surge in Covid-19 cases recorded in the state of late.

Hospital director Datuk Dr Selasawati Ghazali said the move was taken after the capacity of beds at the hospital now stood at almost 98 per cent.

"Earlier in March, the hospital only provided 14 beds for Covid-19 patients and another four for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

"With more patients being sent to our hospital following the surge in Covid-19 cases, we have to add 10 more beds to the wards for Covid-19 patients, and another four for the ICU," she told reporters when met at the hospital today.

Dr Selasawati said with the 10 additional beds for Covid-19 patients, it brings the total number of beds to 238 and the number of ICU beds to 42.

She added that the hospital plans to add more wards for Covid-19 patients if there is a need for it.

"Covid-19 patients currently warded here are those with Stage 4 and Stage 5 infections, and they mostly require respiratory assistance. They also comprise the elderly with chronic disease.

"For those with Stage 1 and Stage 3 infections, they will be placed at Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) in Gelanggang Seni, here."

Dr Selasawati also said the leave of more than 4,000 healthcare staff from the hospital has been frozen since last year.
