Heavy traffic at major highways despite travel ban

KUALA LUMPUR: Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has expressed concern over the massive movement of people despite the ban on all inter-district and inter-state travel until June 6.

"Where are you heading to this weekend," wrote Dr Noor Hisham on his Facebook, accompanied by two photos and updates of heavy traffic at two major highways - the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza heading to the south and at the Gombak Toll Plaza heading towards the east coast.

Dr Noor Hisham said bringing infection from one area to another would not help the country's efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19 infection.

He urged the public to stay at home if they have no urgent matters to attend to outside their homes.

"Help to save the country's health system, which would be paralysed, if the increase of Covid-19 cases become uncontrollable.

"If we (the health care system) collapse, you and your family members may not receive the best possible health care.

"(And) more unfortunate if there are no more beds for you in the hospital, not to mention if you are terminally ill and critical but we are running out of intensive care unit (ICU) beds to treat you.

"The frontliners were exhausted, yet we still strive to save your life," he wrote with the hashtags #LockdownKendiri #BantuSistemKesihatanNegara

Malaysia will be placed under a two-week total lockdown from June 1 to June 14.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister's Office announced the total lockdown after the country logged a record of 8,290 Covid-19 cases.

During the lockdown only essential economic and services sectors are allowed to operate.

The decision was made by the National Security Council in a special meeting this evening, chaired by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
