Bicycling food delivery rider - a sensation in Kota Baru

KOTA BARU: When 19-year-old Mohd Syamil Mansor applied to become a food delivery rider, instead of a motorcycle, he was offered a bicycle as his means of transportation.

But that did not deter him. He took up the offer and is now a sensation.

Syamil, from Pasir Puteh, is among the very few who use a bicycle to deliver food.

Syamil, the youngest of three siblings, applied for the job two months ago at the prompting of his eldest brother, who is a delivery rider in Kuantan, Pahang.

"At the interview, the company's manager told me that the only vacancy available was for a bicycle delivery rider," he said.

Syamil said he didn't think twice about accepting the offer.

"With the Covid-19 pandemic, it's difficult out there and it's hard to get a job. I decided to accept the offer," he said.

Syamil said he doesn't mind as it's a source of income for his family.

His father works in a hardware store while his mother is a housewife. Syamil said times are tough and the family needs all the financial help they can get.

He said while the work is hard, he is grateful to have a job.

"Every day, I travel about 40 minutes from my home in Pasir Puteh to Kota Baru by motorcycle. After parking my bike, I would then take the bicycle and do my deliveries," he said.

Syamil begins work around 10am and finishes about 4.30pm every day. He takes his day off on Friday.

"I do about 10 trips a day and usually make around RM5 per trip," he said.

Syamil's story recently made the rounds on social media, earning numerous comments on his willingness to go the extra mile to earn a living.
