KASA launches environmental sustainability strategic plan

KUALA LUMPUR: The Water and Environment Ministry (KASA) today launched its Strategic Plan 2020-2030: Environmental Sustainability in Malaysia, in conjunction with the 2021 World Environment Day.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said it was a comprehensive document in setting clear goals and targets towards achieving environmental sustainability by 2030.

He said that the plan, a joint effort between the ministry and its agencies, was developed based on three main frameworks that translated into KASA's direction and strategy for a period of 10 years from 2020 to 2030.

"It covers the Malaysia Plan which includes the government's agenda and current policies and also the country's sustainable development agenda through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)," he said when officiating the national-level 2021 World Environment Day, themed "Ecosystem Restoration", virtually.

The Minister also hoped that the plan would be used as a reference by stakeholders such as the private sector, local universities and others to support the ministry's initiatives so that the environment can be well-governed.

World Environment Day was celebrated globally on June 5 every year since 1974 as part of efforts to address environmental issues.

KASA, in a separate statement, said the plan has been drafted and implemented since 2020 based on the concept of planetary health which includes four main thrusts, namely, empowered governance, green growth, strategic collaboration and social inclusiveness.

"KASA's strategic plan has been revised this year by taking into account the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which has an impact on the current economic situation," the statement read.

Meanwhile, a book titled Climate Change Adaptation Framework for Water Sectors, published by the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) was also launched today.

The book outlines a framework on the implementation of climate change adaptation strategies for water resources management and services as well as natural disasters.

In addition, KASA organised several online activities on environmental conservation via its official social media accounts and website at www.kasa.gov.my. --BERNAMA
