Single dad takes down white flag after overwhelming support

KUALA LUMPUR: Barely days after raising a white school uniform calling for help, a single father from Alor Gajah, Melaka, received all the assistance he needed for his family.

Yaakob Montel, 54, said he has already taken down the flag as he received overwhelming support from the community.

"Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals came forward to provide aid for my family.

"Alhamdulillah, I would like to thank everyone for their help," he said when contacted by New Straits Times today.

Last week, the self-employed lorry driver put aside his pride and raised the "white flag" to seek help in getting basic necessities, especially food for his children aged between nine and 17-years-old.

He could no longer get a job and was running out of food supplies since the Movement Control Order (MCO) 3.0 was enforced last month.

He said he took down the flag recently so people will stop giving aid to them and prioritise others.

"Most of us expected that the MCO would not last this long, but it did.

"Others might be crippled by lack of financial support, which led many to take their own lives.

"This is why I took down the flag so that those who want to help can assist others. We got all we need to feed my children and Alhamdulillah this is enough for us," he added.

Malaysians nationwide began the white flag campaign dubbed #benderaputih to signal they are running low on food and other necessities.
