Urgent need to raise awareness on Covid-19 vaccination among children

KUCHING: Efforts to raise awareness on the importance of the Covid-19 vaccination should be intensified among parents so that they will support the vaccination of their children.

Jonathan Chai, president of the Association of the Management Boards of Aided Primary Schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian, urged authorities to organise more awareness campaigns for the public.

He also welcomed the move to vaccinate all teachers, school support staff and students with underlying medical conditions first, before schools reopen.

"This could prevent Covid-19 outbreak or cluster in a school. Ideally, all students should be vaccinated before schools reopen, but understandably this may not be possible due to insufficient vaccine supply," he told New Straits Times.

Chai said many students in the rural and interior areas did not have access to internet for home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) and hoped face-to-face lessons could resume soon.

Sarawak Teachers' Union (STU) president Adam Parkash Abdullah said although prioritising those with underlying conditions to be vaccinated first would not guarantee a total safe school environment, it could still give protection for high risk individuals.

"We are happy that a solid plan has been laid out to make sure that every teacher, school staff and student to be vaccinated, with priority given to those with underlying medical conditions," he said.
