Zahid must explain Umno's true stand, says Annuar Musa

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi must explain Umno's true stand on the party's ties with the Perikatan National (PN) government.

Former Umno supreme council member Tan Sri Annuar Musa alleged that there was no clear consensus made on the decision to withdraw support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, as announced by Zahid early this morning.

Annuar claimed that as soon as the Umno president made the statement, he was contacted by several supreme council leaders that the president's announcement did not reflect the decision made by the meeting held earlier.

He also alleged that what Zahid read to the media was a statement that was prepared much earlier, before the Umno working committee council met.

"If this is true, it is clear that once again, the working committee council is being manipulated, and this is very serious.

"Twenty-five supreme council members have spoken in a relatively calm and honest manner to share their thoughts. Clearly there were many differing opinions.

"There was no significant consensus. No voting was made. In fact, the discussion did not revolve around whether Umno should leave the Perikatan Nasional government, as what has been suggested before.

"In other words, the Umno president must explain the true stand. Immediately issue the correct statement," he said in a Facebook post today.

After a four-hour long meeting last night, Zahid announced that Umno had retracted its support for the prime minister, effective immediately.

He said the Umno working committee council also urged Muhyiddin to step down and make way for a new prime minister.

Zahid, who is also Bagan Datuk member of Parliament, said Umno would neither nominate nor cooperate with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The decision came less than 12 hours after Muhyiddin announced the appointments of Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the new deputy prime minister, and Umno senior leader Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein as the Senior Foreign Minister.
