Blast sound alerts Tanjung Aru villagers to predawn fire

KOTA KINABALU: The sound of an explosion alerted villagers at Kampung Tanjung Aru Baru here to run for safety as their houses were engulfed in a predawn fire today.

One of the victims, Sani Sedong, 24, said during the incident, he was playing a game on his smartphone in his room.

Despite having his headphone on, he could hear a loud thunderous sound and decided to find out what was happening.

"I got up when I heard another loud explosion from outside and as soon as I looked out from the window, I saw fire burning down a neighbour's house.

"I immediately alerted my parents, siblings and cousins who were in the house to escape," he said when met at the scene.

Sani said the blaze spread quickly that none of them had any time to save any important documents or belongings.

Due to the Movement Control Order, he said his family members had already lost their income and were now dependent on food aid.

Another victim, Juldin Jun, 18, said his family was saved by the loud sound of an explosion and people screaming.

Upon hearing the commotion, he woke up his parents and nine siblings to get out of the house.

"The fire was so close at the time. There were also two cars parked just a few meters from the house that exploded when caught fire.

"All I could think of was to save myself and other family members. Although sad, I am thankful because everyone is safe," he said.

Juldin is hopeful that someone will come forward to help the victims with the difficulties.

In the 4am incident, 15 houses and five cars were destroyed in the fire.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.
