Lost baby elephant rescued

SUNGAI SIPUT: An elephant calf believed to be separated from her herd was found under a bridge at the Orang Asli Poi settlement, here, today.

The two-year-old baby elephant named Yong Siput weighing between 60kg and 70kg was found by palm oil estate workers at 7.30am.

Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director, Yusoff Shariff said that there were wounds on her body believed to have been caused by dog bites.

Yusoff said initial treatment had been given to the mammal and her condition was reported to be stable.

"The baby elephant was taken to the Sungai Siput Perhilitan Office. There are wounds on the mammal's body believed to have been dog bites.

"Wound treatment has been given and the baby elephant is now in good condition, "he said when contacted.

Yusoff added that the baby elephant will be taken to the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Center in Pahang soon.
