SEPANG: A leaking disinfectant spray canister was believed to be the likely cause of an explosion that left a taxi mangled and its driver injured at Jalan CTA 4 near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Saturday.

In the incident, taxi driver Radzi Mokhtar, 64, was just leaving the airport after dropping off a passenger.

He decided to light a cigarette and accidentally ignited the leaking can of disinfectant spray.

The explosion, police said, left Radzi with minor burn on his arms and face. His Proton Exora taxi was badly damaged from the incident.

KLIA police chief Assistant Commissioner Imran Abd Rahman said police were alerted of the incident about 3.30pm involving an explosion inside a moving vehicle.

Based on the Fire and Rescue Department's investigation into the case, he said, the in-cabin explosion occurred when taxi driver decided to light a cigarette inside the vehicle which was filled with gas.

"The victim suffered minor burn on his arms and face, and was sent to the Putrajaya Hospital for treatment." he said.
