Malaysia records highest daily Covid-19 fatalities, ICU patients, clusters

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded its highest number of Covid-19 fatalities, as well as the highest number of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients and new clusters in a single day today.

This is the first time the country's Covid-19 death toll breached the 200-mark since the pandemic struck the nation last year after 207 individuals succumbed to the coronavirus today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country's death toll due to Covid-19 currently stood at 8,201.

Selangor accounted for the highest number of deaths (57), Kuala Lumpur (52), Johor (24), Kedah (19), Melaka (18), Negri Sembilan (14), Pahang (seven), Sabah (six), Perak (five), Penang (three) and Terengganu (two).

Fourteen victims were also brought-in-dead (BID) cases.

The number of critical stage Covid-19 patients in Malaysia also reached an all-time high with 1,009 patients currently being treated at Intensive Care Units (ICU), including 524 who are intubated.

The Health Ministry also detected 33 new Covid-19 clusters - the highest in a single day - with 21 of them being workplace-linked clusters.

Among the workplace clusters, the Industri Jalan Perdana cluster involving the Pontian district in Johor contributed the highest number of infections (215 cases) today.

The remaining ten clusters were community clusters while another two are education clusters.

Among the community clusters, the Teratai Kulai cluster involving the Kulai district in Johor logged the most infections (39 cases).

The country currently has 1,005 active Covid-19 clusters.
