Slight drop in new Covid-19 infections in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The number of new infections dropped in Sabah today to 720 cases compared to 818 yesterday.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said most of the cases still came from close contact screenings at 331 or 45.97 per cent.

"It can be concluded that there is still a high possibility that people have failed to comply with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) despite constant reminders by the government," he said in a statement.

He said the existing clusters contributed 226 cases, 103 from symptomatic screenings, 16 from targeted screenings and 44 are from other categories.

However, he said 83.6 per cent of the patients today either had light or no symptoms.

"There are 255 patients today classified under Catergory One (no symptoms) and 347 in Category Two (mild symptoms). Patients under these categories require no hospitalisation but are instead placed at public Quarantine, Low-risk Treatment Centres (PKRC)," Masidi said.

No new clusters were detected today but six fatalities were recorded – four in the state capital and each in Kota Marudu and Sandakan.

Masidi said the red zones in Sabah had increased to 23 districts and only two districts were recorded as orange and yellow zones each.

Meanwhile, 488 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals today, taking the cumulative recoveries in the state to 74,085.

"A total of 3,507 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals (673), PKRC (2,563), and temporary detention centres (271).

"The number of Covid-19 patients in the ICU (intensive care units) is 77 and 17 require ventilators," said Masidi.

On the vaccination programme, 29,255 were administered with their second dose today.

"Another 20,170 individuals signed up for the vaccine, bringing the total number of registrants to 1,079,973." he added.
