Public parks to reopen in Phase 1 states

KUALA LUMPUR: People residing in states under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) will be allowed to visit public recreational parks for leisure activities from tomorrow.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this is to ensure the well-being of the people is preserved, especially in efforts to reduce stress on mental health.

However, he said only individual activities such as jogging, cycling and exercising would be allowed, in line with the sports and leisure SOPs in Phase 1 of the NRP.

"The public is also only allowed to visit public recreational parks in their neighbourhood. Do not cross states or districts to visit other recreational parks.

"This SOP relaxation is very important for people to get more time to be in the open and have a better ventilation system than being just confined at home.

"Hence, I really hope that this relaxation will not be abused," he said this in a statement today in announcing the relaxations for economic sectors for fully vaccinated individuals.

He stressed that the local authorities and related agencies responsible for monitoring compliance with SOPs in these public recreational parks, must be fully responsible for the implementation of the relaxations provided to ensure it is implemented in accordance with the rules and guidelines set and avoid harm.

On the economic sector relaxations announced today, Muhyiddin said the ease of restrictions applied to all phases under the NRP, provided that the complete vaccination rate of the adult population in a state has reached at least 50 per cent and individuals wishing to benefit from these relaxations must have received both doses of their vaccinations.

For example, he said as of Aug 14, the complete vaccination rate for the adult population (18 years and above) in the Klang Valley has reached 64.7 percent.

Therefore, he said individuals who have been fully vaccinated in the Klang Valley can take advantage of these new rulings when they come into effect.

Muhyiddin added that the National Security Council will issue detailed guidelines on the relaxations mentioned in the near future.

Muhyiddin had on Aug 8 announced the easing of restrictions in the social sector for fully vaccinated individuals who reside in states under Phase Two and above of the NRP, which came into effect on Aug 10.

Among the restrictions lifted earlier were the ban on dine-ins, inter-district travel, sports and recreational activities without physical contact as well as tourism activities within the same state involving homestays and hotels.
