Environment and Water Ministry sets 10 key targets as KPI

PUTRAJAYA: The Environment and Water Ministry has set 10 key targets as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for all its heads of department.

Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the targets were divided into two parts namely the environmental sector, and water and sewerage sector.

"For the environmental sector, the ministry aims to draft the legal framework of the National Climate Change Law, formulate the basic structure of the National GHG (greenhouse gas) Inventory Centre and develop a framework for a domestic carbon trading scheme."

"Besides that, we will also launch the Plastic Sustainability Roadmap and launch the Green Jobs Portal to generate employment opportunities in the green economic growth sector," he said in a statement here today.

Tuan Ibrahim said for the water and sewerage sector, the ministry would develop a fair and transparent water tariff setting mechanism and create five new areas for water endowment projects.

He said the ministry would also expand the use of recyclable water resources for the industry, expand the coverage of water supply and sewerage, as well as increasing the national water margin reserve rate.

"I take this matter seriously and the first 100 days are very critical to set the direction of the ministry more clearly."

"There are many duties and roles of the ministry. Apart from the 10 key targets, we will also continue to perform routine functions, such as enforcing pollution prevention laws.

"The ministry is also constantly amending relevant acts, ensuring that all critical projects such as flood mitigation and coastal erosion repair are implemented on schedule, fulfilling international obligations and cultivating people's awareness of the environmental sustainability agenda," he said.

Tuan Ibrahim said for the next two years, the ministry would also participate in local and international events such as the Dubai Expo, United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and Malaysia Environment Day.
