Prioritise people and country, King tells MPs

KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today advised members of Parliament to prioritise the people's interests and the country's wellbeing in the ongoing Parliament sitting.

Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara, Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said in a statement that the King advised those in Dewan Rakyat to bring the focus back to the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ahmad Fadil said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had expressed his hope that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked between the government and the opposition on transformation and political stability on Monday (Sept 13) would immediately end the political turmoil and get the MPs to put aside their political agenda, bringing them together in addressing the pandemic for the people's sake.

"His Majesty has reiterated his view that the people should not be burdened by a never-ending political turmoil as the country is struggling to address its health issues and economic slowdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The king also has faith that with political stability and higher vaccination rate among the people as well as additional aid from the government, the country's economic recovery can be expedited. These factors will also be the key to build confidence especially among investors," he said.

Al-Sultan Abdullah, he said, had stressed that the signing of the MoU was also in line with the Malay Rulers' position on the importance of having a stable, functional, wise and efficient government while the country is busy fending off various crises.

Ahmad Fadil said the king also urged the government to speed up the drafting of business as well as investment-friendly policies to raise the country's competitiveness.

"His Majesty takes this oppostunity to call on the people to stand united and support the frontliners by adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOP) as well as all directives which the government had issued.

"His Majesty also urges the people to remain calm and pray with him for God to protect the country, to be safe from any calamity as well as keep Covid-19 under control and eventually end the pandemic."
