Aid pouring in to help Penampang flood victims

PENAMPANG: Nine hundred and thirty-seven flood victims in Penampang, the worst-hit district following torrential rain a few days ago, will get RM1,000 each from the Sabah government.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the government would also help in rebuilding 10 houses that had been swept away by the strong currents.

The state and federal governments would extend the necessary assistance to the affected residents, said Hajiji during a visit to Kampung Sugud here today, the hardest-hit village that was left covered in mud.

Hajiji, along with state Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Shahelmey Yahya and State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, visited the village after attending the opening session of the Sabah Legislative Assembly sitting in the morning.

He said residents with damaged properties would also be helped in terms of building materials.

To address the flood situation, he said, two out of three flood mitigation packages had been completed in the Penampang district.

"There is only one more (flood mitigation) package to complete to ensure Penampang and its surrounding areas will not be affected by flood," said Hajiji, who is also the state finance minister.

He has also instructed the state Drainage and Irrigation Department to clear any clogged waterways as preventive measures.
