Covid-19 fatalities jump from 334 to 487

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded 487 deaths from Covid-19 as of 11.59pm yesterday, a jump from 334 fatalities reported the day before.

This is the second highest total number of deaths recorded in September, after 592 fatalities on Sept 11.

According to CovidNow, 161 of the deaths were brought-in-dead (BID) cases.

However, the seven-day actual average is on a downward trend as of yesterday, at 106.

The coronavirus has since claimed 24,565 lives in Malaysia since the pandemic struck last year.

Yesterday, 222 deaths were reported in the Klang Valley – 178 in Selangor and 44 in Kuala Lumpur, followed by Sabah (87), Johor (63), Penang (36), Kelantan (26), Perak (18), Kedah (14), Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Pahang (five each), Terengganu (three), Perlis (two) and Sarawak (one).

No fatalities were reported in Putrajaya and Labuan.

As of yesterday, 14,990 new cases were recorded, taking the national toll to 2,142,924, with 201,274 being active cases.

Of the active cases, 168,258 were under home quarantine, 21,581 treated at low-risk quarantine and treatment centres, 10,321 hospitalised, and 1,114 at intensive care units (ICU).

Of the total at ICUs nationwide, 615 were on ventilator support.

For the past 14 days, 7.4 cases were detected for every 1,000 people in Malaysia with Sarawak contributing the most number of Covid-19 infections with 17 cases detected for every 1,000 people.

The number of Covid-19 patients admitted to hospitals nationwide continued to drop, with 10,321 patients currently treated at hospitals, with a bed utilisation rate of 72.9 per cent.

Hospital bed occupancy rates were highest in Johor at 91.8 per cent with 1,924 patients currently receiving treatment.

The nationwide ICU utilisation rate was at 74.8 per cent with Penang continuing to be the state with the highest ICU rate at 99.2 per cent.

The state also reported the highest number of Covid-19 fatalities over the last two weeks with 16.1 deaths for every 100,000 people.

As of 11.59pm yesterday, 68.4 per cent of the population (22,348,422 individuals) had received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, while 58.1 per cent of the population (18,986,347 individuals) have been fully vaccinated.

The Health Ministry projected that the nation can achieve herd immunity, or 80 per cent of the population (26,125,920 individuals) fully vaccinated by Dec 3.

Yesterday, 321,342 vaccine doses were dispensed nationwide, with 121,631 individuals receiving their first dose and 199,711 individuals receiving their second dose.
