Inter-state travel won't lead to spike in new cases, KJ says [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: It is unlikely that inter-state travel will lead to a spike in new Covid-19 cases, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin told the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said the main culprits for new cases were large gatherings or congregations.

Khairy said this in relation to the government's recent announcement that interstate travel will be allowed once the country reaches 90 per cent immunisation coverage.

"It is true that the 90 per cent immunisation coverage among adults in the country would probably consist of only 60 per cent of our total population.

"But, the immunisation coverage will continue to be increased especially in light of the current progress in vaccinating teenagers nationwide.

"I'd like to stress here that inter-state travel alone will not lead to an increase in new cases because congregations are what leads to spikes," he said in his winding-up speech on the motion of thanks on the Royal Address in the Lower House today.

Khairy reminded the public to adhere to all standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the government as this would greatly help the country in breaking the chain of Covid-19 infection.
